Jerry Don Gleaton return

When I began collecting in 1987 (classic Topps design), I remember getting a pack of 1986 Topps cards and seeing a Jerry Don Gleaton card.  I thought having his full name on the card was really cool.  My full name doesn't roll off the tongue so I couldn't pull that off.  This is one of the 80's players that, although wasn't a star player, was always one that I liked.

This ball came back via his home in about 8 days.  Thanks Mr. Gleaton!

Wayne Edwards Return

Although I missed Wayne at the Sox game I went to, I was able to get him TTM to sign this ball.

He also threw in a signed Score card personalized to me.  It was a great return from a late 80's/early 90's player that was right in my infancy of my White Sox fandom!

Thanks Wayne!

Bob Zupcic private signing

Bob spent most of his MLB years with the Red Sox organization.  He was claimed off of waivers in 1994 by the White Sox and played 32 games there before the strike ended the season.  After, he had some time in minor league organizations with the White Sox, Royals, Phillies and Marlines as well as stinted with Reynosa (Mexican league) and Duluth-Superior and Bangor (Northern league) before retiring.

The 1994 team is one of the more disappointing years for White Sox fans due to the season ending early.  It took me almost a decade before I started to pay attention to baseball again.

My 1994 signed ball collection includes: Ozzie Guillen, Roberto Hernandez, Darrin Jackson, Ron Karkovice, Jack McDowell, Tim Raines, Frank Thomas and Bob Zupcic.

Taylor Phillips TTM

Taylor Phillips played his last season in the majors on the South Side in 1963.  After playing with the Braves, Cubs and Phillies from 1956-1960, he spent in parts of 1960 and all of 1961 and 1962 in the minors with the Angels, Philies and White Sox organizations before getting a 9 game look on the South Side in 1963.  He did play in the minors in 1964 with the Atlanta Crackers and the Indianapolis Indians before his career ended.

He signed this ball and an auto card.  It came back in about two weeks.  Thanks!

IP White Sox vs. Twins 7/27

In the winter, I won four vouchers for a White Sox game.  As I was in the area for my sister's baby shower, I took my brother in law to the game against the Twins.  On the White Sox history facebook group, It stated that Bill Nahorodny would be at the game but he was a late scratch.  Fortunately, Greg Pryor was going to be in the area signing as he is publicizing his book.  I got him to sign a ball and I purchased his book.

I had a good chat with him about his years in baseball.  I'm looking forward to reading his book.  We were super early for the game so we got a couple of beers before we went into the stadium.

With the netting throughout the stadium, I didn't try to do any in stadium graphing.  I was just going to enjoy the game.  I did purchase two mystery balls.  I was hoping to get some new players.

Ball #1
I have a Nick Madrigal signed ball already so I might try to trade for another ball.

Ball #2

I don't have a Dylan Covey signed ball but after his start the next day, I was a little less excited about it.

Anyways, the Sox had a great game and I had a great time.

Paul Konerko ball (birthday present)

I recently turned 40 and got $100 gift card for ebay.  I thought really hard about who I'd like to get.  I already had alot of my childhood favorites (Baines, Guillen, Fisk...).  I was debating between a 59 or an 05 guy.  I decided to go with the 05.  The captain, Paul Konerko.  He was my son's favorite player so he's a great pick.  Here are some awesome highlights from his career.

Jason Coats IP Durham @ Indianapolis 7/20/19

I went to the Indians game today as they were playing Durham and the Bulls have two former White Sox players (Jason Coats and Emilio Bonifacio).  I saw Emilio wasn't in the lineup so I wasn't too hopeful for him.

There were a lot of graphers out today.  Jason came out about 15 minutes before the game.  He signed for a couple of people and sweet spotted my ball.

He only played one year in Chicago and was part of a rash of injuries to 1st year players.

My 2016 collection is now at 54% complete with 27/50.

Carlos May Purchase

Carlos is impossible through the mail but is pretty good in person.  Unfortunately for me, he is usually signing at SoxFest in the later part of Sunday and we are usually gone for that.  Fortunately, Under the Radar Sports had an auction for this card which I got for a good deal.
I remember the first time I met him, I was hoping to finish his rookie card as I had the other two sign the card through the mail.

Adding Carlos to the collection helps out for the late 60's/early 70's.

White Sox garage sale 6/8/19

I haven't been in a couple of years so I decided to take the trek up to Chicago for the garage sale.

I got in line around 8:45.  Even though it was supposed to open at 10, I was in there by 9:45.

I went straight to the balls.  In the past they had a bunch of minor players for $5 each.  They didn't have them but they had balls ranging from $10-$100.

I passed on Chris Sale ($100), Robin Ventura ($50), Jose Quintana ($30), Jeff Samardzija ($30), Hector Santiago ($30), Dan Jennings ($20) and Micah Johnson ($20).  I pretty much got every other ball of a player I don't have unless the ball was in real bad shape.  Here were the 15 balls I got (cost $200 total.

 Melky Cabrera
 Josh Phegley

 Gavin Floyd

 Todd Frazier

 Matt Davidson

 Alex Avila

 Javy Guerra
 Matt Lindstrom

 Brent Morel

 Dioner Navarro

 Jake Petricka

 David Robertson

 Dayan Viciedo

 Michael Ynoa

 Zach Duke

All in all, I was very happy with my haul.

I put good dents in several years of completing rosters.

IP-Charlotte Knights at Indianapolis Indians 5/30/19

I was sick the last two days and wasn't able to go to the Indianapolis Indians/Charlotte Knights game.  As I was better, I headed over there.  I really didn't have a lot of players left on the Knights roster that have already played on the White Sox.  When Jose Ruiz was called up on Monday, the only player left was Alfredo Gonzalez.  I did also bring some cards but as I am limiting myself to Topps Flagship/Topps Heritage, I was also pretty limited to just Fulmer, Delmonico, Palka and Engel as I already had cards signed by the others..

After BP, I was O-fer so I wasn't feeling too good.  I did see that Delmonico was on the IL so I wasn't sure if we would see him or not.  Gonzalez wasn't playing so I didn't have alot of hope that I would be able to get him.

30 minutes before, I saw Tanner Banks come out.  I saw him pitch in Kannapolis two years ago so I got him on a signature card.

Gonzalez came out with about 15 minutes to go.  I asked him to sign but forgot to say please.  So I asked again and in Spanish and he came over and sweet spotted the ball.  Later, Palka signed with about five minutes (19 Heritage, and 19 Now RTOD) to go and Engel signed (19 Topps and 19 Now RTOD).

After, I went near the bullpen and Fulmer signed an 18 Heritage.

Ended up being a good day!

My autograph checklist

2018 ROMLB (31)-Abreu, Anderson, Bummer, Danish, Delmonico, Engel, Frare, Fry, Fulmer, A. Garcia, L. Garcia, A. Gonzalez, Hamilton, Infante, Jones, Kopech, LaMarre, Lopez, Minaya, Moncada, Palka, Rodon, B.Rondon, J.Rondon, Saladino, Sanchez, Skole, Smith, Tilson, Vieira, Volstad

Vito Valentinetti TTM return

I have found this site on wikipedia of the oldest living baseball players and was surprised at the number of White Sox players on the list.  I try to send one to someone on the list about 3-4 times a year.  As of this date, I have signed balls from Tom Jordan, Gil Coan, Howie Judson, Vito Valentinetti, Al Worthington, Ted Lepcio and Ray Herbert.  He played one year on the South Side in 1954 before going to the North Side, Cleveland, Detroit and Washington.

On one of the facebook groups I belong to, a family member posted a good picture of him with Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle.

Stan Bahnsen

Usually, when I see a private signing, I try to look online to see what is more economical.  In this case, buying a beckett certified ball was going to be the way to go.
He had some great seasons on the South Side.  I love reading about the Dick Allen era teams.

Ian Hamilton IP 4/12/19

Every time the Knights are in Indianapolis, I try to go.  My kids all decided to bail so I went to this game by myself.  I got a couple of cards signed pre game.  Durign the game, my set was right behind the visitor bullpen.  I waited until the end of the game and Ian was kind enough to sign my ball.  He seemed somewhat surprised I asked for a sweetspot signature.

Kannapolis Intimidators (Boll Weivels) vs. Rome Braves 4/5/19 IP

The last day of our trip was in kannapolis.   This is the last season at this stadium.  I’ve been here before and although I like it, it is definitely time for a renovation.

The weather was a little crummy but the game was able to happen.  My kids aren’t into baseball but I think they will be after this game.  All theee got foul balls and their balls got signed by several players after the game.

As for me, I got romlbs signed by Bryce Bush, Steele Walker and Gunner Troutwine as well as signature cards by 7 players.  Overall a great day!
